The Bar Associations throughout Spain created Mutualidad: a non-profit entity that was created with a vocation for service and as the only compulsory pension fund management entity for lawyers, with coverage only for death, disability and widowhood.
We extended our coverage to include retirement cover under a pay-as-you-go or intergenerational solidarity system. Thus the first Plan Professional for legal professionals was born, the start of what would become years later our Plan Universal, which includes tailor-made solutions for forecasting, saving and investment to guarantee peace of mind for your future.
In 1996 we ceased to be a compulsory system for legal professionals. From then on, self-employed lawyers could choose to contribute to the public system: Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) or to a private system such as Mutualidad.
In line with our commitment and involvement with society, this year we launched Fundación Mutualidad Abogacía, with which we seek to achieve a positive impact on the environment while working to continue creating value for our members through financial education, the promotion of legal talent and awareness and knowledge of ageing and the new longevity.
We moved from a pay-as-you-go system (collective capitalisation) to a system of individual capitalisation. Thereafter, each member pays contributions for themselves and generates their future pension on the basis of the capital they have contributed.
After years of advocacy, together with the Consejo General de la Abogacía Española (General Council of Spanish Lawyers), we have promoted free healthcare for all alternative lawyers. This was undoubtedly an achievement in terms of rights and freedom of choice for legal professionals.
We merged with the Asociación de Mutualistas de la Ingeniería Civil (AMIC). From then on, industrial, aeronautical and ICAI engineers could join Mutualidad to cover their compulsory social security as an alternative to the RETA.
At the end of 2020, Mutualidad set up Avanza Previsión, which started its life insurance business in 2021. Mutualidad Abogacía Group was born.
